The world population of the elderly is continuously increasing and by the year 2050, adults older than 65 years will comprise 1/5th of the global population. In India 3.8% of the population are older than 65 years of age. The leading causes of mortality among aged people comprise respiratory problems, heart diseases, cancer and stroke. Significant causes of morbidity among this group are chronic inflammatory and degenerative conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, psychiatric disorders, parkinson’s disease and age related urinary problems.
According to Ayurveda, ageing is a natural process influenced by factors like time and the body’s inherent tendencies.Ancient scholars like Charaka and Vagbhata titled the opening chapters of their books as “The section on longevity” and “The desire for long life” in their respective texts. In Ayurveda, there are concepts called “Hitayu” and “Sukhayu”. Hitayu refers to a life that is beneficial and conductive to overall well- being, while Sukhayu means a life that is happy and enjoyable. These concepts emphasize living a life that is not only long but also healthy and fulfilling.
Ageing is the natural phenomenon and everyone has to go through it but every individual wishes for delayed ageing or at least achieving it gracefully.
Ayurveda plays a significant role in promoting graceful ageing by emphasizing holistic health practices that support physical, mental and emotional well-being. Ayurveda contributes with following ways-
Balancing Doshas
Ayurveda identifies three doshas- Vata, Pitta and Kapha-and emphasizes the importance of balancing them to maintain health. As individuals age, doshic imbalances may occur, leading to various health issues. In old age, Vata dosha is physiologically in a dominant state and Rasadi dhatus are in a deprived state. This causes the various degenerative changes and process of decay in the body. Ayurveda offers personalized dietary, lifestyle and herbal recommendations to restore balance and promote vitality.
Healthy Digestion
Ayurveda considers digestion to be the cornerstone of health. As people age, digestive strength may weaken, leading to poor nutrient absorption and toxin buildup. Ayurvedic practices such as mindful eating, consuming warm, cooked foods and incorporating digestive herbs and spices, can support healthy digestion and nutrient assimilation.
Detoxification
Ayurveda advocates regular detoxification to remove accumulated toxins from the body. Panchakarma, an ayurveda’s detoxification therapy, helps eliminate toxins, rejuvenate tissues and restore balance. By supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes, ayurveda promotes longevity and vitality.
Stress Management
Chronic stress accelerates ageing and contributes to various health problems. Ayurveda offers stress-reducing practices such as self-massage, meditation and yoga to promote relaxation, balance stress hormones and enhance overall well-being.
Herbal Support
Ayurveda utilizes a vast array of herbs with rejuvenating properties known as Rasayanas. The literal meaning of the word ‘Rasayana’ is combination of two words ‘Rasa’ that stands for plasma and ‘Ayana’ that means path movement. Hence, Rasayana basically nourishes the Rasadi dhatus. The Rasayan herbs help nourish tissues, strengthen the immune system and promote longevity. Adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha, pippali and shatavari are particularly beneficial for supporting vitality and resilience as individuals age.
Mind-Body Connection
Ayurveda recognizes the intimate connection between the mind and body. Practices such as meditation, pranayama and daily self-care rituals help maintain mental clarity, emotional balance and a sense of purpose, contributing to graceful ageing.
By integrating ayurvedic principles and practices into daily life, individuals can cultivate resilience, vitality and a sense of well-being as they age gracefully.
