Akshi Tarpana is one of the specialized treatments for various eye disorders. Akshi means eye and Tarpana means giving strength and nourishment to the eyes.
Eyes play a crucial role in vision, allowing us to see and interpret the world around us. They contribute significantly to communication, facial expressions and everyday task. Regular eye check-up and regular eye care with natural herbs prevent from vision loss and eye related problems.
Ayurveda has unique procedure called Akshi Tarpana for the eye wellness. It is one of the specialized treatment for various eye disorders. Akshi means eye and Tarpana means giving strength and nourishment to the eyes. Akshi Tarpana acts as both preventive and curative therapy for maintaining normal healthy condition of eyes. It is best treatment to improve vision and clarity of the mind.
In healthy persons, Akshi Tarpana is done to protect the eye from degeneration due to the aging process & to improve eyesight. In diseased persons, Akshi Tarpana is used for various diseases of the eye.
HOW IT IS DONE
• Akshi Tarpana is carried out in the forenoon or in the afternoon on an auspicious day after the food (taken by the patient) has been digested
• Patient is made to lay in supine position in a good lighted, ventilated room free from dust and smoke.
• Firstly, facial massage and hot fomentation of face is done.
• Then the eyes are encircled with firm, compact leak proof pali (wall) made up of dough of powdered Masha.
• The patient is asked to close the eyes and over the closed eyes
• Lukewarm medicated ghee is poured over the eyes and patient is asked to open and close the eye intermittently and steadily.
• After retaining of ghrita for stipulated period, ghrita is drained out through a hole made at the bottom of dough wall, near the outer part of the eye and the eye is irrigated with lukewarm water.
• After the procedure, dhoompana and nasya is done.
• Patient is instructed to stay away from exposure to bright lights, wind, sky and luminous objects.
How it works
• The drugs used in Akshi Tarpana is the combination of ghee and decoction of medicines which can cross the eye epithelium.
• Ghee used in Akshi Tarpana provides strength to the eyes because it is a rich source of vitamins, antioxidants, and healthy fats. It is an excellent source of Vitamin A. Studies have shown that Vitamin A contributes in keeping retina healthy and prevents degeneration of eyes due to ageing process. It is also a good source of Vitamin E. Studies have shown that Vitamin E has significant antioxidant properties. It has been linked to lowering risk of cataract.
• Due to more contact time the active component of drug used in Tarpana will be absorbed more to cure the diseases.
Duration of Treatment
It is advised to undergo this therapy twice in a year for eye care and clear vision. For eye problems, the course of the treatment depends on the nature and severity of the disease. Mostly in such cases, the therapy lasts for 4 to 6 weeks.
INDICATIONS
Dry Eyes
The main reason for dryness in the eyes is the use of computers and mobile phones for hours without much blinking resulting in dryness due to absence of proper lubrication in the eyes. This dryness occurs due to the absence of proper lubrication in the eyes. Dry eyes can also be a symptom of other eye diseases. Akshi Tarpana provides proper nutrition and lubrication to all parts of the eyes therefore, reducing problems related to dry eyes.
Painful and Burning Eyes
Due to too much stress on the eyes or contact with dust and dirt sometimes you may experience pain and burning sensation in the eyes. For such problems, regular cleaning of eyes is necessary. Akshi Tarpana is not only good for improving vision but can also be used as a preventive measure for these common problems like eye pain.
Recurrent Eye Infections
Common eye infections include conjunctivitis (pink eyes), keratitis, blepharitis and entry of foreign substances in the eyes. Most of these infections are caused due to contact with dust, dirt or bacteria. The common symptoms of eye infections include redness in eyes, inflammation in eyelids, pain and extra watering of eyes. Some patients suffer from recurrent eye infections in which Akshi Tarpana can be very beneficial. The ghee used is medicated with special herbs which possess anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which helps in curing any such eye infections.
Computer Vision Syndrome
This problem is very common due to the modern lifestyle. The use of computers and even mobile phones for a prolonged period can cause blurred vision, dry eyes, redness in eyes, excess watering of eyes and headache. This therapy helps in restoring vision and reducing the symptoms of computer vision syndrome. The medicated ghee provides strength to the ocular muscles and reduces muscle tensions ensuring smooth movements of eyes.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma refers to diseases caused due to damage of optic nerves and loss of vision. The ghee used in the therapy penetrates deep into ophthalmic structures and provides strength and nourishment. The medication is transported from the cornea to all parts of the eye.
