Ayurvedic Mangement of SCIATICA

Sciatica known as Gridhrasi in Ayurveda, is a condition characterized by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from lower back through hips and buttocks and down each leg.

Sciatica known as Gridhrasi in Ayurveda, is a condition characterized by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from lower back through hips and buttocks and down each leg. The pain results from irritation of the sciatic nerve, can vary in intensity, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating discomfort and often occurs when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine, or narrowing of the spine compresses part of the nerve.
Sciatica can make walking difficult. Sometimes the symptoms of sciatica are aggravated by walking or bending at the waist and relieved by lying down.
Ayurveda’s Perspective
In Ayurveda, Sciatica is known as  Gridhrasi, as gait of the affected person resembles that of an eagle’s walk and the inflamed nerve appears like eagle’s beak, hence the term Gridhrasi is used for it.
Sciatica is primarily associated with an imbalance of the Vata dosha, which governs movement and the nervous system. When Vata becomes aggravated, it can lead to pain and discomfort along the sciatic nerve pathway. Sometimes the vitiation of Kapha along with Vata worsens the pain.

Practise stress management
Chronic stress can exacerbate the symptoms. Incorporate stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness practices to reduce stress levels and promote relaxation.
Keep the affected area warm
Sciatica pain often worsens in cold weather or when the affected area is exposed to cold temperatures. Keep the lower back and legs warm by wearing appropriate clothing and using heating pads or warm compresses.
Avoid prolonged sitting or standing
Sitting or standing for extended periods can put pressure on the sciatic nerve. Take regular breaks to stretch and move around, and use ergonomic supports like cushions or standing mats to reduce strain on the back.
Follow a vata-pacifying diet
Ayurveda suggests consuming warm, nourishing food that pacify the Vata dosha. Include cooked vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and warming spices in your diet. Avoid cold, raw, or processed foods that may aggravate Vata.
Ayurveda offers a comprehensive and natural approach in managing Sciatica by addressing the root cause of the condition, rather than just the symptoms.
