Drumsticks - Ayurvedic Multimineral Herb

Drumstick, known as Shigru in ayurvedic texts, is having treasure of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. It is scientifically known as Moringa. It is a tropical tree that grows throughout the world.

The ancient Indians believed that the healing properties of this plant could provide their soldiers the strength and stamina they required to fight on the front lines, as well as relieve tension and injuries received during battle. It is used to manufacture food and medicine from a variety of components including leaves, fruits, flowers, seed, bark, and root bark. It is a locally accessible and economical herb for malnutrition. The leaves, bark and roots contain essential vitamins, minerals, proteins and iron. The leaves provide 125% of daily requirement of calcium and 61% of manganese. It is of two types on the basis of colour of the flowers shweta and rakta, one is known as katu shigru and other is madhu shigru based on taste as bitter and sweet one respectively. The traditional medical system uses leaves, fruits, flowers, seed and bark to treat various ailments including diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, liver, brain disorders and protein deficiencies in impoverished nations and treating hunger.
Therapeutic Uses
1.    Headache - The gum of drumstick rubbed with milk and made into a paste is applied to the temples of the head.
2.    Skin diseases- After having a bath, apply drumstick oil to the affected area of the body.
3.    Eye diseases – Mix an equal quantity of drumstick leaf juice with honey and put 2 drops in the eyes.
4.    Enlarged spleen and liver – Decoction of the root bark of drumstick along with  plumbago root, rock salt, long pepper and yava kshar is recommended. 
5.    Wounds- In wounds, apply paste of drumstick leaves mixed with ghee.
6.    Calculus- Consume root bark paste cooked in ghee, curd and salt.
7.     Gout – The oil of the seeds mixed with groundnut oil in equal parts is used to relieve pain of gout.
8.    Asthma- Add honey, black pepper powder and yava kshar using bark and drink it.
9.    Syncope–Nasal drops prepared with  root juice along with rasna and kali maricha powder, is instilled for syncope due to fever.
10.    Sore throat – A decoction of the root bark and mustard seed powder is used as a gargle.
11.    Diabetes- Eating the leaves of drumstick with giloy has been found to be effective in keeping the blood sugar level in check.
