GOMUTRA- AN AYURVEDIC MEDICINE

The urine of man, cow, goat, sheep, buffalo, elephant, horse and camel have been described in Ayurveda for their medicinal properties. Urine of the healthy cow should consider the best amongst those of other animals. Traditionally, it is believed to be holy and pure when sprayed in courtyards and home. Its quality does not deteriorate but its color may change over a period of time to red or black, which is due to the minerals such as copper, iron in the urine.

It is usually taken at a dosage of 25 ml at a time, two times a day. It is reported to contain various vitamins (A, B, C, D and E), enzymes and various minerals like iron, copper, sodium, phosphate, manganese, potassium, nitrogen and urea, uric acid. Along with the minerals it also contains hipuric acid (removes toxins through urine) and Aurum hydroxide, which acts as a germicidal and increases immunity power, it is a powerful antibiotic and anti-toxic.
Gomutra wins over various diseases by acting on varieties of germs, germicidal. It helps in balancing the tridosh and helps in proper functioning of liver. It also helps in compensating the deficiency of various nutrients in our body and helps in regaining the health from diseased conditions. It is called as Brain & heart which means it, gives strength to brain and heart and prevents its damage caused due to mental tension and helps in protecting the organs from various disorders and diseases. Cow urine being miraculous poison destroyer, destroys the disease caused by poison, by purifying the toxic chemicals via kidney. Hence cow urine helps in boosting immunity power by increasing the resistance power against diseases in human body.
Properties of gomutra: Gomutra is bitter, salty, warm, light, Sweetish, earthy in flavour. It has laxative and scrapping properties.
Emerging data on cow's urine have reported its anti-fungal effects, its role as Plant growth stimulator and in bio-gas reactors as a growth substrate for methanogenic Bacteria.
An observation made by Dr. A.D.B. Vaidya was that when Shri Shamjibhai at Audiogram sprayed diluted cow's urine on mango flowers, it protected the plant form pathogenic fungi, which destroyed the fruit crops of unsprayed trees.
The anti-fungal or more specifically anti- Fusarium subglutinans activity (in vitro) of cow's urine has been studied in Brazil. Our study of Gomutra was based on this study and has successfully demonstrated that Gomutra is also inhibitory to common human pathogens that were tested. The study of Fusarium subglutinans reports only a decrease in growth of the fungus (no inhibition) at less than 500/0 concentration of cow's urine.
Mostly, cow's urine is given orally directly or indirectly in the form of pills along with other ingredients. Thus, it becomes necessary to study the profile of micro-organisms present in urine. As the urine is taken orally, it should be devoid of any pathogen, preferably any organisms and toxic chemicals. It is a waste product having medicinal property.
