Heat stroke is life threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Heat stroke is a condition in which body is unable to regulate heat. Usually it kills 10% of its victims. Hindi-loo, Punjabi-loo, Sanskrit-Prakshalan, most of the people have heard the term ‘heat stroke’ but many cannot identify the signs symptoms and treatment required for heat stroke victims.
Features of Heat Stroke
• Hot & dry skin
• Flushed or purple skin colour
• No sweating
• Hyper ventilation
• Loss of consciousness
• Lethargy
• Rapid & bounding pulse
• Raised body temp (40ºC/130°F or above)
Cause of Heat Stroke
• Exposure to excessive heat or high air temp.
• Over exercising, especially in summer Season
• Drinking too much alcohol, tea, sodas, coffee, etc.
Vulnerables
• Children
• Elderly people
• People suffering with heart disease
• Diabetics
• Alcoholics
How to Manage heat stroke?
Immediately take the patient to hospitals. However use the following emergency, preventive measures.
• Removes the cloths/cover the body with wet sheet
• Immerse the body in cold water/cold sponging
• Cooling the head & neck becomes the priority
• Rub the limbs with ice-cubes
• Massage the extremities
• If the person is conscious, provide water to drink
• Check the temp, every 10 minutes and continue the management till the body temp. Falls to 101.3°F.
How to Prevent heat stroke?
• Limit your exposure to sunlight
• Wear a hat or cap during exposure to sunlight
• Drink plenty of water during summer season.
• Drink water before and after exercising
• Open windows, use a fan to improve indoor circulation
• Wear light weight and loosely fitted clothes in hot weather
• Eat light and small meals
• Limit alcohol intake in hot weather
• Avoid vigorous and strenuous activity during hot or humid weather especially during the middle of the day.
